A nine-month-old baby from California that was born with the HIV virus, may have been cured of the disease as a result of doctors administering anti-retroviral drugs during the first hours of its life.
This is the second time such a therapy appears to have cured a new born child that was born with the disease, after a similar technique recently found success in Mississippi, where the virus was found to have “functionally vanished”.
The child, born to an HIV-infected mother, is being treated as Miller Children’s Hospital, and is still receiving a cocktail of anti-AIDS drug treatments.
Medical professionals are cautious of describing this baby as being “cured” at this early stage, although the current prognosis appears to be very positive.
