A surfer has survived a potentially deadly shark attack in Hawaii by punching the predator in the eye.

Jeff Horton, 25, was sitting on his board paddling around 180m from the Pila’s beach near Kilauea when he saw a shark coming towards him at high speed.

He managed to get his leg out of the water, but the shark bit-down on his surfboard plunging him into the water and on top of the shark. he then reportedly “rode” the shark, holding its fin and punching it as hard as he could. After making one good contact with the fish’s eye, it released its grip on his board and flung Horton into the air before swimming off.

Horton, who miraculously escaped any injuries, was then able to climb back onto his board and paddle back to shore with the help of another surfer. The shark followed the pair into the shallower waters, but did not attack again.
