A state trooper from Pennsylvania in the US shot his wife when the gun that he was cleaning accidentally discharged.

Emergency services were called to a house in the East Norriton Township at around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) to find JoAnna Miller suffering from a gunshot wound to the head according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Miller was pronounced dead in the ambulance on the way to Mercy Suburban Hospital, and although doctors attempted an emergency caesarean to save the child that had been conceived 22 weeks prior, they were unable to save its life.

The trooper did not know he .45 caliber handgun was loaded when he was cleaning it at his family home when it discharged, tragically killing his wife and unborn child.

Investigations into the incident by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the East Norriton Township Police Department are ongoing.
