A 3.6m gorilla statue built from 40,000 spoons has been unveiled at the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry by Prince Michael of Kent.
The caged gorilla was commissioned in January by entertainer Uri Geller, with the design inspired by the movie King Kong.
Originally, the sculptor Alfie Bradley had only planned to use around 5,000 spoons in the construction, but as the number mounted towards 40,000, he looked for donations of cutlery from school children locally and across the world. Spoons were donated from as far afield as Toronto and Haiti.
The sculpture will sit in the entertainer’s garden in Berkshire, where disadvantaged children will be offered the opportunity to view it and be ‘amazed’, said Geller.
