A spectacular ‘moon halo’ was visible across parts of the UK last night, with amateur and professional photographers alike capturing images of the rare event.
Moon halos, also known as winter halos, occur when sunlight is refracted through million of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in high, thin, cirrus clouds at around 6,000m, and in folklore are said to warn of approaching storms.
