Passengers on an early morning train in Switzerland were bemused to find a snake on board with them.

A 50cm non-venomous black garter snake was spotted in a carriage on the 07.34 commuter train from Bern to Basel, causing staff to call the police and evacuate all 450 passengers from the train.

Police finally managed to catch the snake in a ventilation shaft, according to Bern police.

Another train arrived within half an hour to let the passengers continue on their way without too much disruption, according to Swissinfo.
