A snake-charming pastor reportedly died on Saturday after refusing treatment for a bite.

Jamie Coots was bitten on his right hand during a service at around 20:30 local time in a church in Middlesboro in the US state of Kentucky, but decided to go home rather than visit the hospital for treatment. When paramedics arrived at his home at around 21:00, he refused treatment despite being warned of the dangers of the snake’s poison, and subsequently died.

Coots had recently appeared on a reality television show called Snake Salvation on the National Geographic channel in the US, which was about preachers using snakes as a “test of faith” in their services, despite the fact that owning poisonous snakes is against the law in most states.

Videos on Pastor Coot’s YouTube channel show him and others dancing and handling snakes during a service at the Full Gospel Tabernacle In Jesus Name in Middlesboro, Kentucky in 2011:
