A man was forced to eat his dog after he was lost in the Canadian wilderness when a bear ransacked his campsite and wrecked his canoe.
Marco Lavoie, a 44-year-old climber from Quebec, was on a 3-month solo hike through the unspoiled forests when the bear attack left him isolated without any food and with no forms of transport.
His pet German shepherd was his companion for the hike and chased the bear away, but the dog was his last chance of food and to ward off starvation.
When Lavoie was finally rescued from Nottaway River near Montreal he had had hypothermia, had lost half of his body weight, and was too weak to speak.

He was not prepared. He would not listen to folks familiar w/the area. He ignored advice to not go alone. He would not bring any means of protection (.44 mag Bush Rifle would have been an ideal choice)! Since a bear wiped out his food, he likely got careless with his food, and did not have it secure. Food needs to be sealed as much as possible and stored away from the immediate camping area. The canoe was likely damaged because his food was in it. He made too many mistakes and others had to pay for it (taxpayers, rescuers and his loyal dog). Bears play for keeps. His half-baked wilderness expedition turned into a disaster. Survival experts have stated what good choices he made, why don’t they talk about his poor planning and apparent sloppiness?? Marco Lavoie you are a survivor, but you are also a shameful, disgusting, dim-witted loser! Tragically, judging by the blogs I have read about this sad story, Marco Lavoie is far from alone who would make such stupid choices!!
