Nina Siahkali Moradi in one of her campaign posters
An Iranian woman has reportedly been barred from taking political office in Iran because religious conservatives think she is “too attractive”.
Nina Siahkali Moradi won a seat in the Qazvin city council elections with over over 100,000 votes, but it appears that her looks have essentially disqualified her from taking up the position.
She was apparently disqualified due to “non-observance of Islamic codes” with her dress in her campaign posters, although she does appear to be dressed in hijab in the posters available online. One senior council member quoted as saying of the 27-year-old student from Azad University:
“We don’t want a catwalk model on the council”
The behaviour and clothing of Moradi’s supporter are also thought to have angered many of her more conservative opponents.
