A giant fireball meteor has been recorded flashing through the sky above Devon.
The footage of the ‘bolide meteor’ was filmed at the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth on the south coast at just after 03:00 this morning.
The fireball was reported to have been green in colour and bright enough to cast a shadow, with the meteor believed to have broken up into several pieces as it entered Earth’s atmosphere over the UK.
Footage of the meteor from two separate cameras was uploaded to YouTube by Dave Jones of the UK Meteor Observation Network (UKMON), who said that the meteor was the largest fireball ever spotted by the observatory.
Due to its coastal location and relative lack of light pollution, the Norman Lockyer Observatory has been used by scientists, students, and amateur astronomers since its construction in 1912.
