Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has tendered his resignation following the news that he is under investigation by the Football Association and the Gambling Commission for eating a pie on camera.
A bookmaker had offered the odds of 8-1 that the 23-stone footballer would be filmed eating a pie during the FA Cup match against Arsenal on Monday night.
Sutton boss Paul Doswell explained to Sky News:
“What happened didn’t make us look very professional…It’s something that we’ve dealt with quickly as a club.
“Wayne himself offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon, which has been accepted.
“It’s a very sad end to what has been a very good story.”
The 46-year-old Shaw played down the incident as a “bit of fun”, but accepted responsibility for his actions. He told BBC Radio 4’s World at One:
“We are told we are not allowed to gamble as it is full-time professional football.
“In no way did I put anyone in jeopardy of that – this is not the case here, this is just a bit of fun and me being hungry.”
Sutton lost the FA Cup tie to Arsenal 2-0.
