In a case of real life imitating art, Jamaica may now be able to send a bobsleigh team to the Sochi Olympics after the Reddit Dogecoin forum raised 35 Bitcoins ($30,000) to help them on their way.
On Sunday it was announced that the Jamaican two-man bobsleigh team had qualified for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the first time since 2002, but just as in the 1993 film Cool Runnings, financing their appearance was going to be a major issue.
Winston Wyatt, the pilot of the team, put his own money up to fly the team to the training session to qualify, but he then turned to the internet to try and raise sufficient funds to be able to actually compete in Russia later this year.
Lucky for Wyatt and his team-mate Marvin Dixon, the similarities of their plight to that in Cool Runnings did not fall on deaf ears, and a number of anonymous internet patrons have stepped up to help the duo compete at Sochi, with the subreddit for the crypto-currency Dogecoin raising $30,000 under the title of “Dogesled” (pronounced doggysled).
