A British tank veered off the road and crashed through the fence into an elderly couple’s garden in a town in central Germany.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said a mechanical fault caused the Warrior tank from the Paderborn Garrison to swerve off the road in Paderborn and career into the garden of Ulrich and Magdalene Tilsner.

The Tilsner’s granddaughter, Stefanie Ney, told the Neue Westfälische newspaper:

“My Opa telephoned and said ‘I’m coming somewhat later, I have a tank in my garden’…There was a tank in the hedge and soldiers standing everywhere and our dog was barking like crazy,” she said. “My Oma (grandma) was completely in shock.”

No-one was injured in the incident, and the MoD said that an investigation is underway.
