Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez is facing two charges of first-degree murder after allegedly shooting dead two people because of a spilled drink at a nightclub.

Prosecutors told the court that former New England Patriots tight end Hernandez, 24, killed Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado on July 16 July 2012 after they accidentally spilled his drink in a Boston nightclub.

Hernandez is accused of stalking the two victims and their friends until they pulled up at a red light and then slaying them with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson in a drive-by shooting, before speeding away in his silver Toyota 4Runner SUV.

Both men died at the scene and another passenger suffered a non-life-threatening injury in the attack.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to both murder charges.

When he was charged with the double murder, Hernandez was already being held in Bristol COunty Jail awaiting his trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd, who he is accused of killing in June 2013.
