South and North Korea have exchanged fire across the disputed Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea.
North Korea announced on Monday that they would carry out live-fire drills in seven areas near the border, and South Korea returned fire when a North Korean shell landed in its waters.
The exchange caused the South Koreans who inhabit the islands in the area were evacuated into the purpose-built bomb-shelters for the three-hour incident.
This escalation came days after North Korea tested two medium-range Nodong missiles over the sea and threatened to perform a new type of nuclear test.
The Yellow Sea border between the two countries was drawn by the UN after the Korean war as part of the 1953 armistice agreement, but North Korea has never recognised its legitimacy. Border fire has been briefly but regularly exchanged every few years, the most recent prior to this escalation being in August 2011.
