The mother of one of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram has identified her daughter as one of those in the video recently released by the Islamic militant group.
According to Reuters, one mother from Chibok, where 200 girls were abducted last month, spotted her daughter wearing a veil in the background of the video released by AFP.
The identification will add legitimacy to the video, although there are no details confirming the date the video was taken. It may have been recorded soon after the girls were abducted or it could have been filmed in recent days after the US and UK committed to sending teams to help the Nigerian government recover the girls.
Released on Monday, the video shows Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau exclaiming that he had liberated the girls and converted them to Islam.Previously, Shekau had threatened to sell the girls that the group had abducted, but in this video he stated that he would hold them hostage until all imprisoned militants were freed, saying:
“We will never release them until after you release our brethren”
The Nigerian government originally dismissed the possibility of a prisoner exchange with Boko Haram, with Interior Minister Abba Moro saying that the group was in no moral position to make the offer. However, a minister has since told the BBC that they would be open to such an exchange.
