New Zealand prime minister John Key has raised the possibility of holding a referendum on changing the flag of the country and drop the Union Jack.

Key told reporters that a black flag with a silver fern may be more appropriate and representative of New Zealand. It is already the symbol used on the country’s sporting teams, and has worldwide recognition, whereas some people confuse the current New Zealand flag with that of Australia.

He went on to say that whilst such a referendum was not a priority, it could be held at the same time as this year’s general election, saying:

“It’s not on my agenda now, it’s not a number one issue, but it’s certainly a decision we have to make as to whether or not to progress it.”

Many New Zealanders are reportedly open to the idea, but others have criticised the proposal for being insensitive to those who fought and died under the flag in past wars.

John Banks, leader of New Zealand’s Act party said:

“I’m a bit old-fashioned, I don’t want the name of the country changed, or the flag, or God Save the Queen.”

The debate on changing the flag has made a number of appearances in recent years, with a poll last summer by the country’s TV3 finding that 61% of people would support a change in the flag.
