Thieves stole a truck transporting radioactive material in the Atizapán de Zaragoza municipality, part of the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City.
The Nissan truck was carrying Iridium 192, a radioactive isotope commonly used in medical and industrial radiography, but security services warn it could be used in a ‘dirty bomb’.
The vehicle has since been recovered and the radioactive load was later found dumped close to where the truck was stolen.
The radioactive load was later found dumped by the thieves close to where it was stolen.
According to El Universal, this is the third time that radioactive material has been stolen in Mexico in the last eight months, with thieves making off with stores of Cobalt 60 in December 2013, and soil compacting equipment with radioactive material stolen 8 June 2013.
