A well known gangland figure has been shot dead in Dublin.

Gardai have launched an investigation after Christopher Zambra, 38, was shot and killed outside a house on Cooley Road, Drimnagh at around 15:00 on Sunday.

They found a black Nissan Qashqai on fire near to the scene of the crime, which is believed to have been the getaway vehicle, and a handgun was found inside.

The victim was a convicted robber who was recently cleared of a suspected murder charge following years in prison after bail was denied because of fears he would intimidate witnesses and that he was a flight risk.

According to the Irish Times, the man was understood to be a senior drug dealer and was suspected to be involved with a criminal gang suspected of targeting and killing Real IRA figure Alan Ryan in Dublin in September 2012.
