Prime Minister David Cameron was left with only Hungarian PM Viktor Orban for support as 26 out of 28 EU leaders voted to appoint former Luxembourg PM Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission.

Cameron has pushed for the vote, breaking with the tradition of the president being appointed by consensus, but failed to win any allies in Brussels.

Cameron called Juncker’s appointment a “serious mistake” and worries that Juncker could block the EU reforms that he hopes to have agreed upon before holding an in/out referendum in 2017.

Upon hearing the result of the vote, Cameron tweeted:

“I’ve told EU leaders they could live to regret the new process for choosing the Commission President. I’ll always stand up for UK interests.”

The prime minister lost support in Brussels by aggressively trying to push agendas and refused to try and find a consensus between parties.

Juncker is also likely to win a vote by Euro MPs.
