A Brazilian goalkeeper who “meticulously calculated” the kidnap and murder of his girlfriend, will be allowed to return to playing the sport through a work release programme.
Bruno Fernandes de Souza, 29, was the goalkeeper for Brazilian club Flamengo, costing the club £2.5 million, when he was convicted of murder. He admitted to killing his girlfriend Eliza Samudio and then chopping her body up and feeding it to his pet rottweilers, in an apparent attempt to avoid paying child support.
De Souza was sentenced to 22 years in prison, but under Brazilian law he may now be granted freedom to work, and has signed a five-year deal with Montes Claros. He will have to be accompanied by a police escort to each training session and match.
