Two bodies have been recovered from the river Tyne in the search for the three kayakers reported missing in Northumberland.

Police were alerted at around 23:00 on Sunday when the three men failed to return home to South Shields after going kayaking in Hexham, with the coastguard and fire crews involved in the search effort.

Officers located one of the missing men’s vehicles at Tyne Green, near to Hexham Rowing Club at just before 01.15 this morning, with a second vehicle belonging to another of the kayakers found at 04.10 at Wylam train station car park.

The police discovered two kayaks during the searches, and have now found two bodies: the first body recovered from the river at Riding Mill by RAF Boulmer at 05:00, and the second from the river in the Corbridge area by RAF Boulmer at just before 06.20.

Formal identification is yet to take place, and the search continues for the third kayaker.

Superintendent Steve Howes, from Northumberland Area Command, said:

“Our searches of the area are continuing today with assistance from the HM Coastguard and RAF Boulmer.

“Anyone who sees anything or has any information they think would assist with our searches should contact us.”
