The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation after a drone hit a British Airways passenger plane as it approached Heathrow.

The BA Airbus A320 was carrying 132 passengers and five crew from Geneva to London when it was hit by the drone over Heathrow at 12:50 BST on Sunday.

BA said that despite the collision, the “aircraft landed safely, was fully examined by [BA] engineers and it was cleared to operate its next flight”.

In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said:

“Anyone operating a drone must do so responsibly and observe all relevant rules and regulations. The rules for flying drones are designed to keep all airspace users safe. It is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment.”
