Former Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown has been involved in a fatal three car crash near his home in Somerset.
Ashdown, 72, was being driven by his wife in their Renault Scenic when they were “clipped” by a Vauxhall Corsa while going round a bend.
Ashdown reportedly immediately stopped traffic coming in the other direction so he could check on the status of the Corsa driver, Mark Hurford, but he had died before the former Royal Marine could reach him.
A Ford Transit was also involved in the accident on the A356, with the driver suffering a dislocated shoulder and back injuries.
Lord Ashdown said:
“My wife felt shocked. The police and ambulance turned up and we spent the next two hours going through the procedures that you have to have.”
