Judge Wyn Williams explained that the mother subjected her son to “prolonged cruelty” before sentencing her to 17 years in prison.

Sara Ege was described as a “devoted and loving mother” who herself suffered from depression and domestic violence, but had beat her seven year-old son Yaseen repeatedly over a number of months.

He was then kept home from school one day to learn and memorise a number of verses from the Koran, and his failure to fulfil this task was the “trigger” for the beating that eventually killed him. After his death, Ege then burned his body to destroy evidence.
