A man was hit by a car and killed when walking on the M61 motorway near Bolton on Saturday.

Police have said that they believe the mid-20s male victim was returning from a Tinie Tempah concert at Manchester’s O2 Apollo when he was struck by a Skoda Octavia near junction six southbound at around 23:20 GMT.

The motorway remained closed overnight as police investigated the incident, but have since reopened.

Greater Manchester Police have appealed for anyone with information about the victim to come forward, as they have not yet identified the man who is described as 1.65m tall with light brown hair.

Sergeant Lee Westhead from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“We are working to establish the full circumstances leading to this young man⿿s death. At this stage it is not clear how or why he came to be walking on the motorway.

Our efforts to identify the man have proved to be unsuccessful, however we believe he may have been to a Tinie Tempah concert at the O2 Apollo in Manchester earlier in the evening.

We are now appealing for the public to come forward with information to help with our enquiries. If you are worried about a friend or relative who has not returned home and who fits the description please get in touch as soon as possible. Similarly, if you saw a man walking on the motorway or have any information as to why he would be there, please get in touch.”
