A passenger fell onto the track and was dragged beneath the train at Clapham South underground station in London, causing commuter chaos.

The incident occurred at 08:00 and caused TfL to shut down services between Kennington and Morden, with delays on the rest of the Northern Line.

The woman, reported to be in her 20s, suffered ‘non-life-threatening injuries’ from her ordeal.

Eye-witness reports say the woman was accidentally pushed under the train as people attempted to get on and off the train during the crowded morning rush hour.

The train driver heard the screams of the woman and of those who witnessed her fall and put on the emergency breaks, quickly stopping the train.

Commuters were ushered out off the station as the emergency services arrived on the scene to rescue the woman trapped beneath the train.

Two teams from the London Fire Service jacked up the train to free the woman, who escaped with ‘non-life threatening injuries’.

A number of Clapham-based commuters have taken to Twitter to complain about the “overcrowding” at Clapham South station each morning, which they blame for the accident.

Nigel Holness, London Underground’s Operations Director, said:

“Just before 8am this morning a passenger fell between the train and tracks at Clapham South station.

“The passenger has been recovered by the emergency services with non-life-threatening injuries. There was no service from Morden to Kennington for around an hour, while the rest of the line had minor delays. The service has now resumed.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said the incident was not suspicious.

He said:

“A woman, believed to be in her 20s, was taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.”
