TfL Night Tube routes
Transport for London (TfL) have announced that it will introduce a 24 hour “Night Tube” service on weekends, in plans that will also close ticket offices across the network and cut up to 750 jobs.
Mayor Boris Johnson said:
“This is just the first stage in an opening up of the tube network to become 24 hours.”
The 24 hour service has been welcomed by many Londoners looking to make their way home after a night out, although the RMT union threatening strike action over the job cuts.
The job cuts are expected to save TfL around £40 million a year, with the transport authority facing budget cuts of £78 million in 2013-14.
Alongside the 24 hour night tube service, TfL are promising new trains and station upgrades with increasing disabled access to another 27 stations. Wi-Fi coverage will also be coming to all below-ground stations, and contactless bank card payments across all stations so people can pay without an Oyster as they do on buses already.
