A mountain in the Lake District along with a ceremonial feudal title has gone of sale for £1.75 million.

The 868m high Blencathra, along with the feudal title of Lordship of the Manor of Threlkeld, is being put on sale by Lord Lonsdale as he looks to pay a £9 million inheritance tax bill.

Hugh Clayton Lowther, 8th Lord Lonsdale said:
“My family has owned Blencathra and its manor for more than 400 years, so it will be a great loss. However, we need to realise capital for Inheritance Tax following the death of my father and our aim is to retain the core portions of the Lonsdale Estates intact as far as is possible.”

Any future owner of the mountain, known as ‘Saddleback’ for its distinctive shape, would be restricted as to what they could do with the land as it is fully protected by planning laws and by being in the Lake District national park.

The property is being sold by H&H Property, with sealed bids taken from today and closing on 2 July.
