The 18th Annual Webby Award winners are in, with winners ranging form Jimmy Kimmel to the Jamaican Bobsled team to Tumblr.
The awards were established in 1996 as a way to honour “excellence on the internet”, with the awards broken down into categories and the winners selected by a panel of judges which this year included Tumblr Founder David Karp, House of Cards producer and star Kevin Spacey, and media mogul Arianna Huffington.
The Webby People’s Voice Awards are selected by Internet users from more than 200 countries around teh world, with more than 500,000 people voting this year.
The awards have come under criticism for their “pay-to-enter” and “pay-to-attend” policy, where winners and nominees have to pay $295 to enter, and pay again to attend the ceremony, therefore excluding most of the web from nominations. Some have even called the awards a scam. However, Webby Awards executive claim this helps the judging process avoid becoming to unwieldy, and they are the only awards the web has…
