A tigerfish has been caught on camera leaping out of the water to catch a low-flying bird above.
The Giant Goliath Tiger Fish was filmed catching a barn swallow mid-flight at the Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa, with the footage the first time a fish has been caught preying on a bird during flight according to a new study published in the Journal of Fish Biology.
Reports of such acrobatic hunting by tigerfish have been around since the 1940s, but this footage recorded by Nico Smit and his team at Schroda Dam, a lake on the Limpopo River catchment, was the first time scientists have been able to record the act.
