A Ukip councillor has been expelled from the party for comments she made in an interview that brought the party into disrepute.
Ukip made the move to expel Rozanne Duncan, who was a councillor on Thanet District Council in Kent, in advance of her comments being made public when the interview airs, in an attempt to avoid another damaging scandal.
A source described Duncan’s comments to KentOnline as “jaw-dropping”.
A Ukip party spokesperson said:
“UKIP is expelling Councillor Rozanne Duncan under rule 15 of its constitution for bringing the party into disrepute. She has 28 days to appeal.”
Ukip leader Nigel Farage intends to stand to be the member of parliament for South Thanet in the 2015 elections.
Duncan’s controversial comments are the latest in a series of scandals for the right-wing party, where councillors have been accused of making racist, xenophobic, and homophobic comments.
The scandals and Nigel farage’s comments about breastfeeding have resulted in a sharp decline in support for Ukip over the past month, with the party’s support down 3% to 16%, according to Opinium.
