Northern Ireland UKIP councillor Henry Reilly is unrepentant about his support for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, who many blame for using chemical weapons on 21 August, killing 1,300 people.

As the UK parliament were debating whether there should be British involvement in any future military intervention in Syria, Reilly tweeted:

“Support the war on terror – Support Assad – Stop Cameron.”

The councillor for Newry and Mourne, and UKIP’s candidate in the forthcoming European election in Northern Ireland, deleted the tweet within an hour of posting it, but said he had no regrets about writing the message on the social network when interviewed by the Belfast Telegraph.

Whilst the majority of British MPs agreed that the UK should not be militarily involved in Syria, condemnation for Assad over his role in the civil war which has now continued for 30 months, displacing 7 million people and leaving more than 100,000 dead.
