Sajid Javid has been named as the new home secretary to replace Amber Rudd, who resigned on Sunday night in the wake of the Windrush scandal.
The MP from Bromsgrove will move from his current position as Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary.
Javid is the first BAME ( black, Asian, and minority ethnic) Home Secretary, and is the son of a bus driver, who went to a comprehensive school and Exeter University before becoming an investment bank and then an MP.
Rudd finally quit after weeks of increasing pressure about how she handled the Windrush scandal and misleading parliament over what she knew about immigration targets.
The Home Office’s “hostile environment” policy that is the root cause of the Windrush scandal, that saw hundreds of British citizens intimidated by officers over their immigration status and some deported to countries they had not seen in decades, was implemented by Theresa May during her tenure as home secretary.
