Sadiq Khan has won the contest to become Labour’s candidate for the 2016 London mayoral election, taking nearly 60% of the votes.
In the fifth round of voting, after the elimination of four other candidates, Khan received 48,152 votes, a 58.9% share.
Tessa Jowell, who begun the contest as frontrunner, came in second and received 41.1% of the vote.
Upon hearing the news of his victory, Khan commented:
“I am deeply humbled that so many Londoners have put their faith in me today. Together, we can change London.”
Khan grew up on a council estate in Earlsfield, South London, and was a human rights lawyer with the firm Christian Khan before moving into politics. He was elected to parliament in 2005 as the Labour MP for Tooting, and served in Gordon brown’s government first as Minister of State for Communities and then as Minister of State for Transport.
Previously, he has said that he would step down as MP for Tooting if he was elected mayor in 2016.
