Boris Johnson has resigned from the government over Theresa May’s new proposal for the UK’s future deal with the European Union.

Johnson had been silent since the resignation of David Davis late on Sunday night, and had missed both a Cobra meeting and a Western Balkans summit in London.

The Foreign Secretary made clear he objected to certain parts of Theresa May’s Brexit proposal during the cabinet meeting at Chequers, but decided to back down and sign up to her deal over the weekend.

However, following the resignation of Davis, Johnson has now resigned and has put Theresa May’s government at risk. It is now possible Brexiteers will soon launch a bid to unseat May and replace her with Johnson, who has maintained significant support amongst the Conservative membership.
