Mysterious explosions lit up the sky over the Sverdlovsk region of Russia last week, but their cause remains unconfirmed.

One dashcam video recorded at 18:39 on 14 November (above) shows a dark road being illuminated by a red light on the horizon, which turns yellow and then a bright white before fading away into the darkness over a period of about 10 seconds.

A second video recorded on a mobile phone recorded the event from a different perspective:

The previous evening, two more video were recorded of a similar explosion:

It is unclear what exactly caused the explosion, but one astronomer has proposed that it was caused by a fireball meteor, with the date of the footage coinciding with the peak of this year’s Leonid meteor shower.
