Nude Scanner 3D. Jesta Digital

A television ad for a “Nude Scanner” mobile app has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for it being “offensive” and “demeaning towards women”.

The controversial ad was broadcast during six episodes of the Channel4 soap Hollyoaks, and showed images of a naked woman with her breasts and crotch blurred as the app “X-rayed” a woman with the smartphone’s camera.

The ASA received 26 complaints about the ad being “offensive” and “demeaning towards women”, as well as encouraging anti-social “ladish” behaviour, with the ad shown to a young audience.

Jesta Digital, the company behind the ad, said that the ad made clear it was a joke/hoax app for people to trick their friends, but have agreed to remove the ad.

The ASA ruled:

The ad must not appear again in its current form. We told Jesta Digital GmbH to ensure their future advertising was not demeaning to women and contained nothing that was likely to cause serious or widespread offence.
