Right-wing US news channel Fox News has found itself the butt of British jokes after a “terrorism expert” claimed on air that Birmingham had become a “Muslim-only city” where non-Muslims feared to enter.
Host Jeanine Pirro talks of “no-go zones” that “sound like a Caliphate within a particular country” in Europe, while “expert” Steven Emerson rambles on to say:
“In Britain, it’s not just no-go zones, there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims simply don’t go in. And parts of London there are actually Muslim religious police that actually beat and actually wound, seriously, anyone who doesn’t dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim, attire.”
Birmingham is Britain’s second biggest city with just over a million inhabitants, and has a multicultural population to match. According to the 2011 census, 494,358 residents described themselves as Christian, with 234,411 Muslims, and 206,821 described themselves as having no religion.
Emerson apologised for his factually incorrect comments, but that didn’t stop the Twitter jibes as the #FoxNewsFacts trended on the social network for hours.
