US Ambassador Christopher Stevens being dragged to safety?

There has been much hysteria in parts of the press about Libyans supposedly celebrating the death of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and dragging his body around the compound. Now an amateur video has emerged that shows a group of men carrying Steven’s motionless body through a window, but they are not celebrating and instead trying to save his life amidst the chaos and get him to a nearby car.

In the scene the men are overheard saying (translated from Arabic):

“I swear, he’s dead”

“Bring him out, man! Bring him out”

“The man is alive. Move out of the way…Just bring him out, man.”

“Move, move, he is still alive!”

“Alive, alive! God is great!”

The previous lack of an English translation to the scene had meant that many non-Arabic speakers believed that these men were part of the Islamist Ansar Al-Sharia brigade that are believed to have been behind the attack on the US embassy in which Stevens and three other US diplomats were killed. This, however, does not appear to be the case.

In response to the attacks that shocked many in Libya as much as in the international community, the government has been facing calls to disarm the many militias still acting within the country. In response they have pledged to disband the Ansar Al-Sharia brigade, by force if necessary, and have already made dozens of arrests.
