Jorge Bergoglio, Pope Francis I addresses the crowds in St. Peter’s Square

Jorge Bergoglio, the 76 year old Archbishop of Buenos Aires has been named as the new Pope in a ceremony in the Vatican City, taking the name Pope Francis I.

White smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, as the cardinals inside have decided on a new Pope, a new leader for the 1.2 billion Catholics around the world. The crowds in St Peter’s Square cheered as the bells peeled to coincide with the rising white smoke of the Papal announcement.

It took the agreement of 77 cardinals, two thirds of total 115, for the new Pope to be chosen, and the successful vote was the fourth since the start of the conclave on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after the announcement of Bergoglio as Pope by Cardinal Tauran, he made a speech from the loggia overlooking the square to the umbrella-carrying adoring crowds below.

Bergoglio is a Jesuit and known for being a humble man with a traditional theology.
