Twelve people are reported to have been killed and eight more injured in a shooting at Washington Navy Yard in the American capital.

Shots were reported at 08:20 local time (13:20 GMT) at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, with police quickly alerted and soon arriving to investigate the situation.

Naval personnel on site were ordered to “shelter in place” whilst the search for the shooters continued.

Making statements on Twitter as he obtains news from his watch teams on site, Captain Ed Buclatin, director of public affairs at the Navy Installations Command at the Navy Yard said that one shooter was cornered in building 197.

However, there are reports of a second shooter who is still unaccounted for, with the the scene still considered and “active shooter situation”.

The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department has instructed family members to reunite at the car park of a nearby Nationals baseball stadium.

The Washington Navy Yard is the former shipyard and ordnance plant of the United States Navy in South-east Washington, DC. It is the oldest shore establishment of the US Navy.
