A three-year-old boy has accidentally shot his mother and father at a motel in Alburquerque, New Mexico.
At around 14:00 (21:00 GMT) on Saturday, Justin Reynolds and his pregnant girlfriend Monique Villescas were getting ready to order pizza to their room at America’s Best Value Inn when their son pulled Villescas’ firearm from her purse and pulled the trigger.
The toddler was reaching for his pregnant mother’s iPod in her handbag when he accidentally grabbed the handgun instead.
A single shot struck both his parents with the bullet passing through his father’s buttock and hitting his mother in the arm.
Reynolds told KOB that the incident happened in a split second, explaining:
“All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too.”
Both parents are reported to be recovering.
The child’s two-year-old sister, who was in the motel room with them during the incident, was unharmed.
Albuquerque police have said that they believe the incident was an accident, but they are waiting to do a safe house interview with the boy and his two-year-old sister before deciding if anyone should be charged.
