The US Supreme Court has struck down overall limits on donor contributions by individuals to political parties, opening the door for more private money to be used to sway elections.
The court ruled 5-4 that individuals could donate more than $123,000 (£74,000) to political parties, groups, and candidates, further loosening rules surrounding campaign finance.
Individuals are still limited to donating a maximum of $2,600 (£1,560) to a single candidate, but the limits for overall contributions have been lifted, with critics already complaining that the change will expand the influence of big money in US politics.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that the overall limits on financing politics on US citizens’ freedom of speech, which is protected by the first amendment of the US constitution.
