A shooting incident has been reported at Fort Hood army base in Texas, with reports of at least one person killed and 14 injured.

Fort Hood’s Directorate of Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead, but this is unconfirmed.

Associated Press, citing a “senior US defence official”, said there was at least one death and 14 injuries.

The base remains on lock-down with officials imposing a “shelter in place” order, as emergency services attend the scene where unspecified injuries have been reported.

The injured personnel are being transported to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center and other local hospitals.

Discussing the ongoing situation in Fort Hood, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said:

“We know there are casualties — both killed and injured.”

In a brief statement to reporters in Chicago, President Barack Obama described the incident as a “fluid situation” and said:

“”I want to just assure all of us we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

“We’re heartbroken something like this might have happened again.”

This shooting comes less than five years after 2009’s mass shooting at the military post, which left 13 soldiers dead and 32 injured.
