A nine-year-old girl in Arizona has killed her shooting instructor as he was showing her how to use a high-powered submachine gun.

The instructor was teaching the girl how to use the Uzi at Last Stop shooting range in White Hills when the recoil from the weapon caused her to lose control and shoot Charles Vacca, 39, in the head.

Vacca was airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital but died from his injuries.

The girl’s parents filmed the incident, and the video, which ends abruptly just as the girl loses control of the firearm, was released by Mojave County Sheriff’s office.

The Uzi is a family of Israeli open-bolt, blowback-operated submachine guns, which were designed for the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1950s and is capable of 600 rounds per minute and automatic and semi-automatic fire.

  1. Couldn’t this tragedy have been avoided? Did the shooting instructor have to insist on going on auto mode? Did he not imagine the impact of the recoil and the danger to himself and the 9 year old? And what about the range? Didn’t they foresee the potential for disaster? (shouldn’t there be stricter laws on private ranges as to who gets to handle weapons???) What about the parents? Why would they allow a child to be in such close proximity to lethal weapons and what does this suggest about our collective attitude towards guns?
