A subway train crash in the Bronx area of New York has left four people dead and more than 60 injured, with eleven people in a critical condition in hospital.

The 05.54 Metro-North train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central Station derailed as it entered a bend in the tracks near Spuyten Duyvil station.

Witnesses report seeing the train travelling faster than normal at the time, but the train’s “black box” recorder will be able to offer more information about the crash.

Earlier rumours that the crash could have been related to the derailment of a freight train in the same location in July are unfounded according to federal investigators.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an investigation into what New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo described as “a very tragic situation”.
