Former US President Jimmy Carter has said that he sends letters via traditional post rather than email to try and avoid the prying eyes of the National Security Agency (NSA).

He told Meet the Press on US television network NBC that if he wants to communicate securely with a foreign leader, diplomat, or just a personal friend, then he hand-writes a letter and takes it to the post office, preferring the 2-7 days delay of physical mail to the insecurity of email.

He said:

“I believe if I send an email, it will be monitored”

This news comes after months of revelations from NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden that have demonstrated the scale of NSA snooping on digital communications from email, to private messaging on Facebook, to Skype.
