The US state department has issued a worldwide travel alert because of an al-Qaeda threat, with people warned to take particular precaution in the Middle East and North Africa.

This travel alert comes after the US announced that 21 embassies and consulates in 18 countries would be closed on Sunday after intelligence about an al-Qaeda threat, with further closures possible.

The state department have warned people to be vigilant throughout the month of August, with the alert expiring on the 31st. In a statement they said:

“Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August”

The Obama administration are being particularly cautious over terror threats this year after four Americans, including ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, were killed in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi on September 11th last year.
