A Florida woman is recovering in hospital after she was bitten on the leg by a shark in Fort Lauderdale.
Jessica Vaughn, 22, was in the water on a large rubber tube, or ‘tubing’ on the Intracoastal Waterway, when a shark bit her leg just below the knee.
She initially thought she had cut her leg on some glass in the murky waters, but soon realized that she had been bitten by a shark in what she described as a “surreal” incident.
Peter Hogge, 25, and some friends on a boat nearby managed to pull Vaughn on board and used a t-shirt as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding as they headed to the dock at the Bayshore Towers, where paramedics could take her to Broward Health Medical Center.
The bite, most likely from a bull shark, left Vaughn with a crescent-shaped wound, but the shark did not appear to attempt to pull off the flesh, which has causeda number of commentators to describe her as very “lucky”.
